Eating a nutrient-rich diet, working out, and drinking half a gallon of water per day will help you lose weight. However, even if you practice these body care steps, you may still notice excess fat around the midsection. To help you eliminate it and achieve your goals, here’s more information about a few habits that cause this issue.

What Causes Fat in the Midsection?

1. Alcohol

Frequent consumption of alcohol leads to inflammation, hypertension, and liver disease. It also slows down the body’s fat-burning process because it is used by your metabolism for energy when combined with carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that women only drink up to one drink per day. Men can consume up to two drinks per day.

2. Added Sugars

body careProcessed foods and baked goods often contain large amounts of added sugars. Cake, candy, frozen yogurt, soda, sweetened coffee, and tea are common culprits. Note that artificial sweeteners aren’t the same as naturally occurring sugar in fruits

A healthy daily intake of added sugars equals to nine teaspoons per day for men, and six teaspoons per day for women.

3. Inactivity

Sedentary lifestyles also contribute to weight gain. Even weight that has been lost is likely to return if you stop moving.

Aerobic exercises help you prevent abdominal fat from reappearing after weight loss. These can include circuit training, kickboxing, dancing, and squat jumps.

4. Stress

When you experience stress, cortisol is released in the brain. When produced in excess, this hormone can lead to weight gain, especially in the stomach area. Stress also drives unhealthy habits, including overeating, alcohol consumption, poor body care, and inactivity, further worsening issues.

To manage stress, try meditation, yoga, or journaling.
