Your car might not be able to speak, but it often shows when it is struggling in other ways. For instance, the brakes will usually make odd noises when something isn’t working properly. Here are some of the warning sounds they tend to make and what they mean.

What Brake Sounds Are Not Normal?

1. Squealing

This high-pitched sound is the most common sound people notice when braking. You shouldn’t write it off as just an annoyance. Many of today’s manufacturers design their brake pads with metal protrusions, and when the pads have worn down, the rotor will connect with this piece of metal and cause a squealing noise.

2. Thumping

When the rotors become warped, they can cause a thumping sound to emanate from under the car. This is a common issue for the front brakes because the front wheels receive most of the pressure when braking.

3. Screeching or Grindingbrakes

When the brake pads are completely worn, the rotors will make direct contact with the discs when you press on the pedal. This will produce a loud, grating sound and shouldn’t be ignored. Driving in this condition is unsafe, and you should head to the local auto repair shop for a full brake repair. The discs and rotors may have to be replaced before new pads can be added.

4. Rattling

As brakes heat up and expand from use, they can make a rattling sound. If you notice this noise even when you aren’t braking, it could indicate the pads are the wrong size for your car and have jammed. Visit a mechanic to have them inspected and replaced with the right size.
