You depend on your septic system daily, so it’s wise to know how to take care of it. Regular maintenance will help extend its life span, allowing you to save money and avoid stress. Here are some tips on what to do with your septic setup.

Do:

Get regular pump.

A septic system needs to be inspected at least once a year. Having a professional check the tank, drainfield, and pipes will give you early notice of any potential problems, so you can address them before they compromise the system.

Pump the tank.

For the average household, Gecko recommends septic pumping is necessary every year to clear out solid waste from the tank. At the time our Pumper will be able to identify a problem. The more you use the system, the faster it will build up sludge and sediment and need to be pumped.

Don’t:

Flush unsafe items.

septic systemSome items, including diapers, feminine hygiene products, cat litter, wet wipes, and cotton balls, are unsafe for your septic system and should never be flushed. These absorbent items will expand and create clogs, which may lead to backups in your home plumbing.

Use too much water.

Even water alone can overload your system in high enough amounts. To reduce this risk, invest in low-flow faucets and shower heads.

Also, avoid using more than one water appliance at the same time; for example, don’t do the laundry while you wash dishes or someone is showering.

Keep in mind that the drainfield is susceptible to flooding, so avoid directing sprinklers or downspouts toward it.
