If you love fine art and want to hang paintings in your home or office, you should protect them from premature fading. Unfortunately, environmental factors like sunlight can cause artwork to lose their vibrant colors. Preserve the brilliant hues in fine art by following the tips below.

4 Tips for Preventing Paint From Fading on Artwork

1. Chose an Appropriate Placement

The best way to prevent your artwork’s colors from fading is to display them in the right areas. Window-facing walls are usually bathed in sunlight, which means any art placed in that area receives considerable ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can damage paint, paper, and fabrics. Limit your artwork’s exposure by displaying it in areas that don’t receive much direct sunlight, such as a hallway.

2. Hang Oil Paintings

fine artIf you have a lot of natural light in your home, you can safely hang oil paintings. Though chemical changes can occur in oil paints with extended exposure to heat and direct sunlight, the changes happen gradually. If you want to hang art on a sunlit wall temporarily, oil paints are the best choice.

3. Reduce Sunlight in the Home

If you must feature artwork in a well-lit room, consider occasionally reducing the amount of natural light it receives. During the brightest times of the day, draw the blinds or close the curtains. Since prolonged exposure can fade most paints, extend the vibrancy of the art by giving it a break from the sun. Also, apply a UV-blocking film on your windows so that you still protect your artwork with curtains pulled back.

4. Use the Right Frames

Frames can help your art maintain its color. UV-protected frames with an acrylic or glass covering that contain a silica coating are excellent at filtering out UV light. Specialized framing will work with watercolors, oil, and acrylic paint, as well as canvas prints. While it won’t block all of the sun’s rays, it is a highly effective way to protect against premature fading.
