Whether you own a yacht or fishing boat, you’ll need to use a boat trailer to take it to the marina. Safe transport relies on more than just your driving skills and the type of trailer you use. Below are key facts to know about trailer tires to ensure your vessel is safe.

What to Know About Boat Trailer Tires

1. Keep Them Properly Inflated

If the tires are under- or overinflated, they won’t handle bumps and road obstacles well.

Alaska’s temperature fluctuations can change tire pressure drastically, so use a gauge before taking any trips to the marina. The optimal pound per square inch (PSI) is marked on the tire’s sidewall.

2. Use Special Tires for Large Boats

marinaHeavy boats create a lot of downward stress. Special Tires—labeled ST—are engineered to handle this safely. These have much thicker sidewalls that evenly disperse weight and help keep the trailer upright.

If you only take short trips to the marina, choose bias-ply ST tires. On the other hand, radial ST versions work best for long hauls.

2. Recognize Wear & Know When to Replace

While these tires don’t typically see a lot of mileage, they carry excess weight. For this reason, they only last around three to eight years.

The tread on the tires should be around 4/32-inch deep. To check this, push a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln’s head down. If you can see any part of his head, the treads are overly worn. This provides a weak grip on the road. Be mindful of any cracks or bulges, which may happen due to long-term sun exposure. Always carry a spare so you can get back on the road if a tire gives out suddenly.
