It’s easy to overlook your AC system until summer strikes because you're not actually using it. Should one of the components need repairs, though, you’ll want to address them before the temperature rises. As such, HVAC contractors encourage homeowners to schedule a tuneup every spring. Here are a few other steps worth taking now so your AC system will operate at optimal efficiency all season long.

How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer

1. Clear the Condenser

Since the condenser is located outside, it tends to accumulate leaves, dust, twigs, and dirt over time. This debris can inhibit efficiency by obstructing airflow, so you should clear it out before turning on the unit. Take off the top and side panels, and use a soft brush to gently dislodge dirt from the coils and fins. If any of the fins are bent, straighten them while you work using a precise fin comb. Then, vacuum up any debris that settled inside the condenser. Finally, check the drain for clogs.

2. Check the Condensation Lines HVAC contractor

The piping that diverts condensation away from the unit can become clogged over time. Should excessive debris, mold, or mineral deposits block the condensation line, the water could back up into your home. If you’re unsure where the pipe drains, ask your HVAC contractor to show you during the next tune-up. Check this pipe periodically to confirm there are no clogs.

3. Address Any Refrigerant Leaks

If your AC has developed a refrigerant leak, it won't become apparent until you turn the unit on —unless you take a proactive approach. To ensure the unit will be fully functional once you actually need, address any such issues before the temperature spikes. If you noticed any signs of a leak at the end of the prior summer, such as loss of cooling power, high utility bills, frozen coils, or hissing sounds, call out an HVAC contractor to determine the refrigerant levels sooner rather than later.
