Losing baby teeth is an exciting time for a child. It’s a natural process and an important milestone, and you want to be confident you handle the situation correctly. Pulling a loose tooth out too early could create developmental problems while keeping it in too long could get increasingly uncomfortable. Use the following dentist-approved steps for the best outcome.

What to Do When Your Child’s Tooth Is Loose

1. Determine if It’s Accidental or Natural

The lower front teeth are the first to naturally come out, often around age 6 to 7. Baby teeth guide adult teeth into place. If they fall out too early, it could lead to alignment issues.

Why a tooth is loose is an important factor. If it was loosened after a fall or blow to the face, leave it alone and seek a dentist’s opinion. This is especially true if it’s a back tooth that shouldn’t come out for several more years. The dentist can determine if it’s safe to remove the tooth or if they should implant a stent to keep it in place for a while.

2. Wiggle

dentist-enterpriseIf the tooth is naturally loose, don’t pull it just yet. Encourage your child to gently wiggle it back and forth with their tongue throughout the day. There’s an adult tooth right behind it that will ensure it falls out at the right time.

Don’t encourage them to wiggle with their hands—they may introduce bacteria into their mouth. If you have concerns about them swallowing the tooth, don’t worry. It’s not ideal, but it’s perfectly safe.

3. Know When to Pull

Some baby teeth will remain extremely loose but hold on for too long. You may need to remove them on your own if weeks pass. First, check with your child’s dentist again. They may want to perform an extraction in the office. If a home extraction is safe, try having your child bite on an apple or other food that will snag the tooth and safely pull it out of the socket.
