Adoption is an exciting way to expand your family. The process required to bring a child into your home is intricate and time-consuming, however. Adoption laws are in place to ensure parents-to-be are mentally, physically, and financially able to provide for a young one. Find out what steps you will have to complete to adopt a child in Missouri below.

5 Steps to Adopting in Missouri

1. Meet the Basic Requirements

To become an adoptive parent, you must be at least 21 years of age and be in good health, physically and mentally. You will be required to undergo medical screenings to prove your well-being.

2. Undergo a Criminal Background Check

3. Prove Financial Stability

The state wants to be sure you can care for a child financially. You must provide proof of financial stability, for example in the form paystubs, bank statements, and employment contracts.

4. Home Visit

A representative of the state will visit your home to check that it is safe and suitable for children. They may ask questions, for example regarding the surrounding neighborhood and your plans for the child’s education.

5. Complete a Training Program

Assuming the previous points are in order, you will then complete a training course. This teaches everything from how to connect with your child to how to address developmental delays. Missouri provides this free of charge.
