It’s not unusual for people to share their home with some spiders—and while you may not be happy to see eight legs scurrying across your floor, most species are not a cause for concern. However, if they are too populous or are of a dangerous variety, you should call for pest control right away. Below are some kinds of spiders to be wary of in Texas.

What Spiders Should You Look Out for Around Your Texas Home?

1. Brown Recluse

pest controlThe brown recluse is one of two species of spiders in Texas with venom that’s harmful to humans. They are usually a golden brown color and have a dark, fiddle-shaped pattern behind the eyes. They are often seen in basements or garages. Their size ranges from 6-20 millimeters (0.24-0.79 inches).

2. Black Widow

The other Texas spider with harmful venom is the female black widow. Jet black, they have a globe-shaped abdomen with a red or orange-yellow hourglass on the underside.

Seeing a male indicates that a female may be nearby, but males are not dangerous. Males are not easy to identify, but they are often small and brown with red or white markings on the upper side of their abdomen.

A haphazard web near the ground is also a sign that black widows are present.

3. Brown Widows

Brown widows are often confused with black widows because of their similar appearance. Although this species of spider has toxic venom, the amount that’s released when they bite is so small that it doesn’t pose any medical threat to humans. However, your pets are still at risk. If you see a spider and are unsure what species it is, contact pest control to be safe.
