Whether you’re locked in or locked out, a garage door that doesn’t open is a nuisance. However, before contacting a garage door repair specialist, there are a couple of potential issues to check to isolate the problem or even fix the issue yourself. Here are a few reasons why you might have trouble opening your garage door.

3 Reasons Behind a Stuck Garage Door

1. Transmitter Issues

If you’re attempting to open the door while driving toward it, you could be too far out. If you know you’re in range and it still it won’t open, there might be an antenna issue. The antenna hangs from the garage motor, so check that nothing is obstructing it and that it’s not damaged. If it is, a garage door repair specialist will need to replace it. If the antenna looks fine, you may need to reprogram the transmitter altogether. You can do this yourself by following the instructions in the owners manual.

2. Blocked Path

The same problem happens if the track on which the door sits has debris or mud on it. If the door hits even the smallest object on the track, it’ll stop and go back up to avoid crushing anything below. Proactively prevent this from happening by regularly wiping down the track and sensors with a damp rag to keep them clean.

3. Unaligned Track

A garage door runs on a track, and it needs to be in alignment for the door to move backward and forward. If the track rails are bent or you hear a rubbing noise when the garage door reaches the same spot each time it opens or shuts, it’s out of line and needs to be fixed before the weight of the door makes the damage worse. A garage door repair specialist can realign the doors by loosening the screws holding the track to the frame and gently tapping the track with a rubber mallet to nudge it back into position. Don’t attempt to do this yourself, as you could cause further damage to the system or cause an injury by having the door fall down.
