Your heating system is designed to create enough heat to keep your home at a comfortable temperature without becoming hot enough to damage their mechanical components. When something goes wrong, overheating can cause inefficiency, breakdown, or even a fire. Know the early signs that the motor is overheating so you can have it fixed before the problem escalates.

How to Identify an Overheating Furnace

1. Unusual Noise

If your heating system is making strange sounds, it’s likely a problem with the blower. When this is obstructed, it can create a banging or squeaking noise. To compensate for its reduced function, the blower works harder, creating excessive heat that can also lead to a louder humming noise than usual.

2. System Cycling

3. Smell

A burning scent is common when you turn on a heating system for the first time of the season. This is the dust buildup burning away. Once that happens, however, it should not smell anymore. A hot or burning smell coming from the vents  after a few hours of use indicates the motor is overheating.

4. Poor Heating

An overheating motor is not working as efficiently as it could be. Because overheating can affect the mechanism responsible for circulating the air throughout your home, cold spots or cool air coming out of the vents could be a sign of your furnace overheating.
