Cowboy boots have always been known for their hardiness and durability. But where did they come from, and were they made for cowboys? While their origins are unknown to many, and they are now often seen as fashion pieces, the actual history of this riding boot variant is surprisingly functional. Here’s what every wearer of Western apparel should know about cowboy boots.

Original Function

During the 19th century, the original cowboys, Mexican vaqueros, were using flat boots that were not well-suited to the task of driving cattle. To make their newfound professions easier, Anglo-American settlers adopted and adjusted the design of the Northern European riding boot.

Like the riding boot, cowboy boots cowboy bootswere designed with a high heel and narrow toes to prevent slipping and provide easier access in and out of stirrups. The arches of the boot were thick and reinforced to allow riders to stand on their stirrups for more extended periods comfortably. The quintessential knee-high design prevented chafing from stirrup leather and protected the legs from frequently encountered hazards like sharp brush, bramble, and barbed wire. Made from sturdy leather stitched from the outside to prevent buckling, cowboy boots were built to protect and persevere.

Modern Fashion

The first cowboy boots were made for function only, making them a far cry from modern variations. While initially, cowboys had to visit cobblers and order custom-made boots, they are now widely available at shops specializing in Western wear. The simple, practical look soon gave way to colorful stitching and fun designs sewn onto the boot. As the necessity for purely practical boots died out, shoemakers began to experiment with more creative styles.

Western wear would see many booms and declines throughout the 20th century. Still, the star power of famous actors, politicians, fashion models, and musicians sporting their cowboy boots towards the end of the century definitively brought them back. Today, cowboy boots are seen as fashionable footwear every Western wardrobe fan should have.
