From toasty, warm electric blankets to space heaters, you’ll be using plenty of power this winter to make your home cozy. Unfortunately, electrical fire hazards are more likely to occur during the cold season. If you’re hoping to keep your home safe and comfortable all season long, use the following electrician-approved tips to help reduce your risk.

3 Electrician-Approved Safety Tips for Winter

1. Take Precautions Against Leaky Pipes

During the winter, freezing temperatures may cause water inside your plumbing system to turn to ice. As it expands, the ice may crack your pipes, allowing water to leak out. If water comes in contact with your electrical system from pipes situated above outlets, you risk electrocution or a power outage. Insulate pipes with foam sleeves to keep them warm and prevent leaks. You can also have an electrician install a flow sensor to alert you when water pressure decreases. A deduction in pressure may signal a hidden leak.

2. Watch Cords

electricianIf you’re using a space heater or an electric fireplace, be careful about where you plug them in. To avoid accidents that may cause a fire, keep these sorts of appliances as close to the outlet as possible. If you allow cords to stretch across a room or hide them under area rugs, foot traffic will eventually erode their protective coating. When cables fray, the risk of fire increases. In addition, don’t overload power strips and extension cords. If you exceed their load capacity, they may overheat and cause a fire.

3. Protect Yourself From Carbon Monoxide

Many heating and cooking appliances capable of producing carbon monoxide are used during the winter, including furnaces and portable generators. This odorless, invisible toxic gas, which is nearly impossible to detect on your own, is known as the silent killer. It may result in everything from dizziness to death. To keep your family safe, install a carbon monoxide detector that plugs into the wall on each floor of your home and in the rooms where you sleep. When the alarm goes off, evacuate the house immediately.
