Dentures typically last anywhere from five to eight years, and they will last to the upper end of this range if you take proper care of them. Well-cared-for dentures will also keep your mouth comfortable and healthy. Once your dentist has fitted you with your new set, follow the care guide below to maintain them for years to come.

Denture Care Guide

1. Clean Them Regularly

You may eat with your dentures in your mouth, but you should remove and rinse them after every meal. This flushes out the food and other debris so that it won’t dig into your gums or the prosthetic material. Brush them at least once a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Only use normal toothpaste when brushing your gums, as clean gums will keep the dentures clean too.

2. Handle Them Carefully

chesterfield, mo dentistPeople often accidentally damage their dentures when they are out of their mouths. Whenever you remove them, place a towel down in the sink and hold the prosthetics over the sink. If you drop them, they won’t fall too far and will land on a soft surface so that they are less likely to crack. Take care when brushing the plastic and clasps as well so that they don’t bend, as this could require an emergency visit to the dentist.

3. Keep Them Wet

Dentures need to be kept wet to maintain their shape, and once they dry out, they warp. While you wear them, your saliva will keep them moist. Place them in a denture-soaking solution overnight, or any other times you do not have them in your mouth. Do not place them in tap water, since this may have chemicals in it that can damage the dentures.
