Oil furnace malfunctions in winter don’t only diminish comfort. The inefficiencies are also costly, as equipment drains more energy to maintain the desired temperature. To prevent breakdowns and high energy bills, here’s some maintenance advice.

How to Maintain Your Oil Furnace

1. Clean & Lubricate the Blower

Dust, dirt, and other airborne particles get pulled into the home heating system, coating the blower motor. It directs cold air in return ducts to the heat exchanger. Once heated, the air is pumped into warm air ducts for release inside the house. The blower also helps the oil furnace maintain a consistent temperature. When covered in grime, it won’t be able to perform these duties. In addition to wiping off the blower, lubricate the fittings to improve performance.

2. Replace the Filter

If air can’t flow through the oil furnace, the unit could also overheat and break down. To avoid the need for a new system, replace the filter once a month.

3. Clean the Pilot Light

The pilot light flame ignites the oil furnace burners. As long as the system is running, the flame should be continuous. To ensure it doesn’t go out, keep the pilot light clean by scrubbing it with a brush. When grime collects in the intake valve, there’s not enough oxygen to produce a steady flame.
