Golf was invented over 500 years ago. Since then, it has grown into a celebrated sport, and its rules have certainly changed over time. Today, there are 34 rules, not including sub-rules and sub-sub-rules. Whether you’re a novice or expert golfer, all those regulations might overwhelm you. To increase the odds of success on the course, here are a few of the most vital rules to remember.

What Are the Top USGA Rules?

1. Don’t Touch Vegetation

When in doubt, hit the ball as it lies—no touching or adjusting. If you find your ball in a patch of loose grass or leaves, you might be tempted to bend down and clear its path. However, when you move, pull, or break vegetation, you can receive a penalty of two shots in stroke play or lose a hole in match play. If it’s green or grows, let it be.

2. Make a Free Drop

golfSome golf rules are made to help you in your times of need. If you hit your ball into the water, grounds under repair, or other impediments on the fairway or putting green, you can drop the ball at the nearest point of relief. When taking your free relief, ensure the ball isn’t any nearer to the hole from where it landed. You must drop the ball from knee height. If you land on the wrong putting green, drop the ball one club’s length from the edge. There’s no penalty for a free drop.

3. Call for Repairs

Putting requires patience and focus; ball marks on the green interrupt your focus and even the route of your ball. If you notice the green is disturbed by spike marks, indentations caused by clubs or flagsticks, or animal damage, you’re allowed to repair it. However, you’re not allowed to fix aeration holes or natural imperfections on the green. Check to see what’s causing the imperfection before attempting to fix it.
