A gas fireplace will provide your family with warmth during the cold winter months. However, although gas appliances don't produce as much soot as their wood-burning counterparts, upkeep is still required to extend your appliance's lifespan and maintain the quality of your equipment. To care for your fixture, practice the following steps.

Upkeep Tips for Your New Gas Fireplace

1. Brush Off Gas Logs

To emulate the look of wood-burning installations, gas fireplaces contain logs. However, soot can collect in the vents, decreasing the intensity of the flame. To keep your equipment from working harder and draining more energy to maintain the fire, take out the logs and remove the residue with a soft-bristle brush. If the logs don't have vents, have a professional safely handle this task.

2. Check the Protective Glass Panel

While it's cool, clean the surface gently with a soft sponge and approved cleaning product. This will allow you to see hairline cracks, chips, and other imperfections that could weaken the integrity of the glass, causing it to shatter when exposed to intense heat. If the panel is damaged, have it replaced before using the fireplace again.

3. Schedule Professional Inspections

Like any appliance, a gas fireplace should be regularly inspected for problems. During a service appointment, a technician will examine the burner ignition, clean the firebox, and provide additional solutions to maximize performance. By catching minor issues early, they can provide repairs before equipment becomes unsafe to use.
