Although equipment damage can cause drain clogs, bad habits could also be to blame for blockages. Plumbing contractors are often called to scoop out and dislodge non-biodegradable items stuck in toilet and sink drains. To avoid the need for emergency drain cleaning or more aggressive plumbing repairs, dispose of the three items below in the trash rather than flushing them or tossing them into the sink.

Which Items Should You Keep Away From Your Drains?

1. Feminine Hygiene Products

Instead of flushing feminine hygiene products, keep a stack of small paper bags in a bathroom drawer or cabinet. You can put these items in the bags and throw them out with the trash. Flushing tampons and sanitary pads is never a good idea, as these items contain cotton and other materials that won’t break down in the septic and sewage systems. If water jetting doesn’t work, a plumbing contractor might have to dismantle toilets to remove feminine hygiene products obstructing the channels.

2. Coffee Grounds

Stillwater-Minnesota-plumbing-contractorIf you make coffee in the morning or for an afternoon pick-me-up, don’t toss the grounds down the kitchen sink. In moist drain lines, the particles clump together and stick to the surfaces. The buildup will eventually make it difficult for water to pass through, causing backups. If you like to garden, coffee grounds can be added to fertilizer. Otherwise, throw the residue out with the trash.

3. Paint

Whether interior painting or working on arts and crafts projects, never pour leftover lacquer down sink drains. It will dry in pipes, making the channels too narrow for other items to pass through. After wastewater is treated, chemical residue can end up in groundwater as well, contaminating the liquid. Check with your local municipality for proper paint disposal procedures.
