Using a snowplow means getting behind the wheel when roads and sidewalks are dangerous. Snow, ice, low visibility, and slippery streets increase the chances of property damage and accidents. Luckily, there are some ways to stay safe as you make hardscapes safer for your family and passersby. Here are a few guidelines to follow.

How to Use a Snowplow Safely

1. Know the Right Moves

Knowing when to raise and lower the plow is essential for safe, effective snow removal. Start by lifting your blade as you approach the side of the building, lowering it, then backing up to pull snow away from the foundation. As you clear the parking lot, keep the plow blade low, then raise it as you approach a pile of snow. This allows you to build the pile upward and helps prevent collisions into frozen snow, which could damage the equipment.

Don’t wait until snowfall is over to start working. Plowing while it’s still coming down prevents it from accumulating, making the job easier.

2. Maintain the Equipment

To ensure this component is always effective, have it cleaned as soon as you notice any instability in the blades.

3. Prevent Accidents

Careless plowing can damage a gravel driveway, so lower the plow shoes whenever you’re working on uneven surfaces. This will also help prevent damage to grass and landscaping.

It’s tempting to try to get the job done as quickly as possible, but excessive speed could result in accidents. For the safety of everyone around, always stay below 25 miles per hour.
