Contact lenses come with a lot of responsibility. Since they touch the surface of your eye, it’s crucial to keep them clean to prevent injuries, infections, and other issues. Knowing when to replace your lenses is an important part of eye care. Use the following guide and work with your eye doctor to ensure you don’t over-wear yours and create problems.

When to Replace Your Contact Lenses

1. You’re Nearing the Expiration

If you’re getting close to the expiration date the manufacturer provided, replace your contacts—even it seems like they’re fine. Daily lenses should be thrown out each day, 1- to 2-week disposables should be replaced respectively, monthlies should be replaced every 30 days, and overnight lenses should be replaced between 1 week and 30 days. Damaged contact lenses may warp and hold onto bacteria longer. They can also be uncomfortable to wear and will lead to constant irritation.

2. They’re Cloudy

You can prevent bacteria by following eye care tips. Always store contacts in an approved storage case, and fill it with an approved cleaning solution. Wash your hands any time you handle them, and clean the case out periodically.

3. They Lose Their Shape

Contact lenses are carefully designed to fit over the contour of your eye. If they’re warped, they won’t fit comfortably, which can lead to lacerations and irritation. Avoid these serious issues by replacing your contacts. If your fresh lenses fit uncomfortably or aren’t as effective, speak with your eye care professional about the fit and potential issues like dry eye disease.
