4 Ways to Break a Fever March 2, 2020

Hamden, New Haven County
4 Ways to Break a Fever, ,

While a fever is defined as any temperature above the body’s normal rate of 98.6 F, it isn’t typically considered significant in healthy adolescents and adults until it reaches 100.4 F. While it’s still advisable to consult with your family doctor, there are several other ways you can manage a mild fever. If you have a fever you can’t seem to break, try the following four tips to bring it down and find relief.

How to Bring Down a Fever

1. Take Over-the-Counter Medication

One of the easiest ways to reduce a fever at home is by taking over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Both are designed to reduce headaches, as well as lower fevers. Make sure to note the dosage requirements for each, as they can vary based on age. For stubborn fevers, you can often alternate both acetaminophen and ibuprofen, but talk to your family doctor about what medication schedule you should follow.

2. Make Yourself Comfortable

Opt for lightweight clothing and a thin blanket if you need one for comfort, but make sure you’re not sweating, as this could worsen the fever. Allow your body to cool off while you rest by taking off layers if needed.

3. Use a Cold Compress

Another simple way to bring your fever down is by using a cold compress when resting. Take a clean washcloth and soak it in cold water. Place this across your forehead, covering both temples, and leave it on until it feels warm. Repeat until you note a reduction in your temperature.

4. Take a Tepid Bath

If you have tried all the methods above and haven’t seen your temperature decrease, run a bath with tepid water. Using strictly cold water or adding ice should be avoided, as this can actually drop your body temperature too quickly and you may experience chills and uncontrollable shaking. Stick to lukewarm water and soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
