Waikiki is home to world-famous beaches and resorts, making it the perfect playground for families. Whether you want to dip into the local culture, explore the wildlife, or enjoy a history lesson, make time for the following activities when planning your next family getaway.

5 of the Best Family Attractions in Waikiki

1. Honolulu Zoo

The Honolulu Zoo features over 1,230 animals on its 42 acres. First opened in 1947, this zoo has since become home to a menagerie that includes giant tortoises, gibbons, Asian elephants, and southern white rhinoceroses. Stop by during the day, or enjoy a Twilight Tour on the weekend.

2. Waikiki Aquarium

resorts-oahuThe Waikiki Aquarium is home to over 3,500 aquatic residents. Built next to a coral reef, it first opened its doors in 1904 and was the first to display Pacific coral—some of which are over 30 years old. Landmark attractions have included giant clams, broadclub cuttlefish, and blacktip reef sharks. There are nearly 500 species to explore, making it an excellent way to spend an afternoon.

3. U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii

History buffs will love the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii. Focusing on the period between the military of pre-Imperial Hawaii and World War II and the Vietnam and Korean Wars, you’ll find artifacts and exhibits illustrating Hawaii’s important role in the U.S. military.

4. Water Activities

Spend an afternoon away from your resort paddleboarding, surfing, or skimboarding on the beaches. There are many rental stores and schools where you can get private lessons for your family. If you want to venture further, book a deep-sea fishing, whale watching, snorkeling, or sunset cruise tour.

5. Parades & Street Events

Parades are an integral part of Waikiki culture, and you’re likely to find plenty outside of your resort. Throughout February are various 10K and 5K runs, cycling races, and the Ukelele Picnic (Feb. 16th).

In March, check out the Oahu Festival (March 7th), the Honolulu Festivals Parade (March 8th), and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (March 17th).
