As your child’s mouth develops, their adult teeth will have to work together to align properly. However, a number of issues can interfere with this process and lead to a misaligned smile. While orthodontic appliances can help straighten your child’s teeth, it’s important to focus on preventive steps. Below are the most common causes of crooked teeth in children and ways to avoid them.

Bad Habits That Cause Crooked Teeth

1. Tooth Decay

Decay-causing bacteria can erode enamel, the protective layer on your child’s teeth, and contribute to can cause cavities, root canal infections, and other issues that cause teeth to fall out early. Adult teeth won’t have the roots of the baby teeth to guide them into position, which can result in misalignment.

Promote daily brushing and flossing. You can invest in child-friendly dental care products with fun flavors and cartoon characters. Track your child’s brushing and flossing on a reward calendar, and bring them to the dentist twice a year.

Tooth decay is also connected to diet. Eliminate soda, sugary sports drinks, and candies. Instead, provide vitamin- and mineral-rich foods, such as milk, broccoli, apples, Greek yogurt, and nuts. These foods help strengthen enamel, and the texture of fresh fruits and vegetables will naturally scrub the teeth.

2. Thumb-Sucking

In severe cases, it may even draw their jaw forward, resulting in an underbite. These issues will require orthodontic appliances to fully resolve, so break the habit early. Focus on identifying triggers like stress and then reminding your child not to suck. Reinforce good behavior.

3. Trauma

Bumps and falls are going to happen, whether on the playground, at home, or during organized sports. If your child loses a tooth, adult teeth can come in crooked. Ask their dentist about a custom mouthguard to protect your child’s teeth during contact sports and activities.
