The Baptist church encourages members to spread God’s message through missions. There are many beloved Baptist missionaries who evangelized millions of people in their lifetimes. Whether you are an active evangelist or simply want to know more about the others who came before you, use this guide to learn about the earnest efforts of a few followers of Jesus.

Who Are the Most Famous Baptist Missionaries?

1. William Carey

Carey is one of the most highly regarded missionaries in the Baptist church. Born in 1761, this Englishman was a pastor at a humble church in his village. While he wasn’t formally educated, he read a lot about foreign countries and eventually grew concerned about the lack of spirituality around the world.

It was his calling to engage in foreign missions and spread the word of God, so he traveled to India to share his teachings. One of his most noteworthy achievements was the Serampore Form of Agreement, a document he wrote to discuss ministries and outline his missionary goals. It served as inspiration and guidance for future missionaries.

2. Lottie Moon

It wasn’t until Moon turned 18 that she was baptized, deciding to dedicate her life and work to the teachings of Christ. Several years later, she was appointed as a missionary in the Shantung province of China.

High Point, NC Baptist churchShe was something of a local hero and a true force for the Baptist church. Outspoken and unafraid to share her teachings, she encouraged her fellow Baptists at home to join in her mission and spread Christ’s word to millions of Chinese people. She assimilated to life in Asia, learning the local customs and wearing traditional attire. Passing away in Japan in 1912, Moon is remembered as someone who tirelessly gave to others.

3. Adoniram Judson

Born in Massachusetts in 1788, Judson lived in Burma, also known as Myanmar, for decades. His goal was to guide the Burmese people to find their faith through Jesus Christ.

During his time there, he achieved numerous goals in the name of the Lord. So locals could better understand Christ’s teachings, he translated the Bible and other important Christian documentation into two languages. He also wrote materials for Christian education, and routinely encouraged Baptists in the United States to come together and spread God’s message.
