If you experience neck or back pain every time you take a long flight, you’re not alone. Sitting in the same position for hours can take a toll on your body.  Knowing what to do the next time your back pain flares up—and what common mistakes to avoid—can help you enjoy a much more comfortable flight.

Do:

Watch your posture.

You should try to check your posture about every 20 minutes. If you are looking at a screen or a book, it should be even with your eye level, so your neck isn’t bent forward. Push your shoulders and your buttocks back to avoid the slouching that causes neck and back pain.  

Bring support pillows.

back painPeople naturally slouch when sitting in a plane seat, so support pillows will help you maintain proper posture. Bring a small pillow to tuck in behind your lower back, which pushes the bottom of the spine forward along its natural curve. A neck pillow helps keep your head upright and even allows you to take a nap without getting a crick in your neck.

Don’t:

Stay stationary.

Your body needs to move and stretch. If possible, reserve an aisle seat so you can easily get up and move around when it is safe to do so. Do a few stretches, such as turning your shoulders from side to side, reaching your arms up over your head, and touching your toes. This helps keep your spine from locking up and causing neck and back pain.

Forget medication and heat wraps.

Bring any prescription medications or anti-inflammatory painkillers that your doctor has recommended to stay relaxed. The TSA allows heat wraps in your carry-on bag, so pack them, too. The heat will relax the muscles when applied directly to your back or neck.
