If you're making cremation arrangements for a departed loved one, you have several options. This service can be conducted with or without a casket, and the timing and surrounding services can vary. There are three different kinds of cremation service, each defined by the presence or absence—and the timing—of a funeral.

What Are Your Cremation Options?

1. Direct Cremation

This is a term for an immediate cremation with few or no additional services, such as embalming. No funeral or memorial service takes place. This is by far the most straightforward approach and the easiest to arrange. It's suitable for situations where money is a concern, or where your loved one would have preferred a no-frills approach.

2. Cremation With a Memorial Service

CremationIn this case, your loved one is cremated first, and the memorial is held any time after. This way, you can incorporate the scattering of the ashes into the ceremony, if you want. It also allows you to invite family and friends who would have difficulty gathering on short notice; there's no practical deadline for the service like there would be for a funeral or viewing.

3. Cremation Following a Funeral

You can also have a traditional funeral with a casket, a viewing, and other services, with cremation afterward. Rental caskets are available for this purpose, or you can buy one appropriate for burning—with no metal components. This is the perfect choice if you want to have a viewing or hold a traditional funeral ceremony for the sake of closure.
