Installing a wood fence on your property not only protects it from outsiders, but it adds significant curb appeal. Wood fencing typically lasts around 15 years, but it could go past 20 with frequent maintenance and upkeep. Consider using these four methods to extend the life of your structure.

4 Wood Fencing Longevity Tips

1. Paint

Repaint wood fencing every three to five years with latex paint or an exterior oil-based stain. This will prevent rot and slow the process of weathering. Pick a color with a UV inhibitor to further protect it, as sun-bleached wood will start to turn grey. Use either a power sprayer or a foam brush.

2. Clean

Wood fencingRaw wood needs to be cleaned gently with soapy water, but wood fencing that already has a coat of sealant can be rubbed more aggressively with a 20% bleach and 80% mild detergent mixture. Use a rag to wipe off all the dirt and debris and spray the soap off with a water hose. Ensure that all soap is removed from the fence, or it could cause discoloration.

3. Seal

Before applying a layer of sealant to the wood fencing, clean and paint it if needed. Allow it to dry for three days before applying any sealant, so it doesn’t unintentionally trap moisture; this could lead to mold. Use a paintbrush or a spray nozzle to coat the wood evenly. Always read the directions on the can before applying, as some sealants need to be diluted with water.

4. Repair

Inspect your property regularly to ensure your wooden fencing isn’t bowing, decaying, or has any fallen pieces. While inspecting it, jiggle the wood slightly to see if it’s firmly attached to the ground and check for any loose nails and hammer them in. If your structure has a gate, confirm it’s secure by greasing the hinges and checking the locks.
