Many youngsters struggle to write sentences or comprehend what they’ve read. Without proficient reading skills, your child won’t progress in language arts courses, understand word problems in math class, and be able to follow directions for science projects. Beyond enrollment in reading programs for kids, the below games are designed to boost your child’s knowledge. 

Which Games Can Improve Reading Comprehension & Vocabulary?

1. Match Words With Their Meanings

To identify their strengths and weaknesses, read books with your adolescent. If they come across a difficult passage while reading aloud, write down the words that they struggle to pronounce or don’t understand the meaning behind. Compile the list to create 20 flashcards. The first ten should have a different word written on each. The last ten should include the corresponding definitions. Spread numbers one through ten out on one side of a table and numbers 11 through 20 on the other side. Have your child flip over a card and look for its match with the correct definition. 

2. Hunt for the Right Words 

In your child’s class discussions and reading programs, they are expected to recall information quickly. To help your youngster learn to identify words and skim for important details faster, pick out a few standout vocabulary words in a chapter. Create a list of four words, three that are included in the text and one that isn’t. Test how long it takes them to identify which word from the list isn’t in the chapter as well as the page number and paragraph of each word that is. 

3. Pen a Story

To help your child practice connecting words to form coherent sentences, have them author their own story. For inspiration, take a walk with them around the yard or neighborhood and have them write down notes about what they see. Creating a story about the adventure will allow them to focus on adjectives and verbs to expand their vocabulary.
