It's natural to be nervous about your first Brazilian wax. It’s no secret that getting waxed “down there” is hardly a day at the beach (though it can certainly give you the confidence to flaunt what you’ve got in a barely-there bikini). Thankfully, there are ways to ensure a relatively easy and stress-free appointment. Just follow these tips leading up to your first Brazilian wax.

Do:

Shower just before your appointment.

The cleaner you are, the more thorough your waxing can be. Don’t head to the salon after spending eight hours at work and then two hours at the gym—unless you shower in the locker room first.

Confirm to your cycle.

brazilian waxMany women claim waxing is most painful during the week leading up to menstruation. If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax and you’re unsure of your pain threshold down there, it’s wise to schedule the appointment for about three days after the end of your period.

Don’t:

Shave.

To achieve a totally smooth bikini area, your waxer needs at least ¼ inch of hair to work with. As such, you should stop shaving about two weeks before your appointment. After the wax, your bikini area will remain smooth for a couple of weeks. If you’re satisfied with the results, experts recommend ditching the razors altogether and getting waxed every three to four weeks.

Make a fashion statement.

Granny panties aren't just for laundry day anymore. You’ll want to wear comfortable cotton panties to your appointment. The breathable fabric and loose fit will prevent irritation.
