Your exterior door locks are often the first line of defense in home security. Two types that are typically used for front doors are regular latches and deadbolts. Understanding more about how both of these models work can help you decide what’s right for your home.

Latch Locks

How They Work

Latch types use a spring-loaded bolt with an angled metal tab that releases securely into the doorframe mounting, securing the door. When the bolt retracts past the strike plate, the door opens. This lock can be connected to either doorknobs or handles. They are opened with a key on the exterior but can also be opened with just the interior knob.

When They’re Best

locksA latch is a secure option because it locks automatically, and is a smart choice for those who may forget to lock their door. However, depending on its location, it could be opened without a key because the inside knob doesn’t require one to use the door. If there’s a window next to the door, for example, a burglar can break the window, then reach around and open the door.

Deadbolts

How They Work

A deadbolt is a solid metal bolt that slides into the mounting on the door frame. It is not connected to a knob or handle, and must be locked from the outside. Some unlock with a lever, while others require a key for the interior.

When They’re Best

Deadbolts are often used as a secondary lock placed above a latch bolt. They are ideal for security because they are very strong, and force likely will not be able to break through them. They are also much more challenging to pick than a latch.
