Concrete driveways can last up to 30 years when properly maintained. When neglected, however, it will quickly deteriorate with cracks and crumbling. Know how to care for your new surface to keep it beautiful and durable for decades to come.

Do:

Address cracks immediately.

Concrete expands and contracts under extreme temperature changes, which creates cracks. These cracks need to be repaired immediately because they will only get larger over time. They are a weak spot in the surface that allows harmful materials – water, oil, etc. – below the surface to compromise it. A paving company can easily seal those cracks so they won’t be a problem.

Seal it.

Don’t:

Use a de-icing salt.

De-icing salt is only to be used on asphalt; it is harmful to concrete. The sodium chloride is corrosive to the cement, so it will form pits in your driveway. When you need to clear the snow or ice on your driveway, use a plastic shovel rather than a metal one to avoid chipping the surface.

Park heavy vehicles on it.

You can park your regular vehicles on your driveway without issue, but heavier machinery such as trucks and buses, are too much weight. In the long-term, they’ll exert pressure that damages the surface. Your driveway can handle oversized vehicles for a couple of weeks, but don’t plan to park these machines for months at a time.
