Pool cracks can be unsightly and take away from the aesthetic beauty of your outdoor space. In some cases, they’re more than physical problems; they can cause leaks if they aren’t resolved promptly. Here’s what you should know about this common issue so you can contact a contractor before it worsens.

Why Cracks Form in Pools

There are several different types of cracks that can form in the pool’s surface. Some are superficial, less concerning hairline fissures that can be resolved with adhesive. These openings typically develop shortly after contractors complete pool construction during the curing stage.

How to Detect a Leak

If you have a leak, you’ll need to contact a contractor to resolve the problem before it worsens. There two ways you can detect a crack:

  1. Set an empty bucket on a step in the pool and fill it to the water’s level. Mark the bucket to indicate the fill line, and turn off the pool pump. The next day, check if there are any disparities between the amount in the bucket and the pool.
  2. Perform a dye test by adding a drop of colored dye near the area you suspect a leak. Avoid disturbing the water’s surface while adding the dye. If the color travels in a direct line, there’s probably a leak present wherever it’s flowing toward.
