When a small business relies on refrigeration to provide quality products, taking care of each unit is as essential as maintaining the furnace or air conditioning system. Whether you own a restaurant or a flower shop, performing regular refrigerator tuneups will contribute to optimal efficiency, thereby reducing overhead expenses. It will also ensure total customer satisfaction because your products will always be at their freshest. Here are some of the most critical steps to take when maintaining your units.

How to Care for a Commercial Refrigerator

1. Keep the Interior & Exterior Clean

Over time, dust, dirt, and other debris can accumulate on the appliances at your place of business. Whereas this may not be cause for concern on enclosed furnaces or HVAC filters, it can pose an issue for the condenser coils on your refrigerators and freezers. If too much grime builds up, it will inhibit efficiency.

Vacuum off these coils regularly using a brush attachment. Keep the interior of the fridge clean, too. This will ensure its contents don't absorb foul odors while in storage. Once a week, remove everything, scrub the shelves with soap and water, and dry thoroughly.

2. Inspect the Gaskets Often

furnaceThe gaskets lining the doors ensure a tight seal when they're closed. Because they disintegrate over time, inspect them periodically for any cracks or splits. Once a gasket is compromised, the fridge is no longer as efficient as it could be. To extend the life of your gaskets, wipe them down with soap and water every time you inspect them. Oil, grease, and dirt can contribute to the faster deterioration of the rubber.

3. Empty the Drain Pan

At least once a month, pull out the drain pan and empty it. Then, clean it with soap and water or a vinegar solution before replacing it. This will prevent mold growth, foul odors, and pooling water near the base of the unit. Every few months, check the tubing that leads to the drain pan, as well. Should too much grime accumulate inside the tubes, a clog will result, causing the water to back up through the defrost system.
