Tooth decay is one of the most prevalent health problems affecting children. For many decades, adding fluoride to toothpaste and drinking water has been used as a way to counter these effects while kids are developing good dental care routines. However, there have been recent concerns about the side effects of consuming too much fluoride. Use this guide to determine if you should choose fluoride or non-fluoride toothpaste for your kids.

What Is Fluoride & Its Role in Dental Care?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in the ground, water, air, and your bones and teeth. It’s used in many different industries but primarily in dental health products to rebuild weakened enamel, slow down mineral loss, reverse tooth decay, and prevent harmful bacteria growth that can lead to cavities.

Three decades after fluoride was introduced to water supplies in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 68% drop in missing and decaying teeth among 12-year-olds

When Is Non-Fluoride Toothpaste the Better Option?

dental careConsuming fluoride in large doses does have some side effects. Most notably is dental fluorosis—a condition that occurs when the teeth are still forming under the gums and causes them to develop white spots. As this tends to only affect children under the age of eight, making the swap to non-fluoride toothpaste until your kids have learned to brush and spit correctly can prevent this cosmetic issue.

However, it’s only recommended to make the swap if you live in a community that has fluoride in the water supply. Brushing alone doesn’t seem to have a big impact on stopping cavities. While it does remove food and plaque deposits and makes the breath fresher, it doesn’t adequately help to protect or restore the enamel.
