When it comes to trends in men’s clothing these days, you might think casual is the way to go. This isn’t the case, however, as more and more men are adding suits, ties, and other excellent attire to spruce up their look, both for professional occasions and informal happenings. If you’re new to the trend, here are a few tips on adding dressier elements to your wardrobe.

How to Put Together a More Professional Look

1. Dress for the Occasion

men's clothingBusiness professional, business casual, and true casual are all separate things. With business professionals, suits, ties, and dress shirts are all required. These are clothes you’d wear to a job interview. When it comes to business casual, ties and suit jackets are not necessary, but you should still wear a button-up or polo shirt tucked into dress pants. And for true casual attire, aim for khakis and smart jeans paired with plain t-shirts or untucked button-ups.

2. Know-How to Match Shoes & Socks

It doesn’t seem like a major concern, but clashing shoes and socks can ruin men’s clothing. Leather dress shoes are preferred for more formal occasions. Shoes don’t need to match your pants, but they should be in the same color family or at least be a complementary color. With socks, make sure they reach at least mid-calf and fit into the color scheme created by pants and shoes. For example, white socks would probably look out of place with dark pants and shoes.

3. Be Conservative With Accessories

The right type and amount of accessories can set off your outfit, but too many accessories can make you look like you’re trying a bit too hard. For jewelry, stick to the basics like watches and wedding bands and stay away from bracelets, necklaces, and pinkie rings. Cuff links are also great, but be sure to choose a subtle, understated pair.
