What Should You Know About Diabetic Retinopathy?, Brooklyn, New York

Some medical conditions are known for affecting the eyes, one of which is diabetes. People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which high blood sugar alters the retina’s blood vessels. These changes can affect vision and may result in abnormal blood vessel development, impeded blood flow, or swelling and leaking of the vessels. While regular eye exams can help you stay on top of any diabetes-related changes, here are some facts you should know about the condition.

What Are the Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?

During its earliest stages, diabetic retinopathy may not produce outward symptoms. As it progresses, however, individuals typically notice vision changes. Blurred vision, floaters, and dark spots are a few common symptoms to watch for. Additionally, you may notice colors losing their vibrancy, or find that your vision is changing. Typically, these changes occur in both eyes.

How Do Regular Eye Exams Help?

eye examsDiabetic retinopathy can’t always be prevented. However, effective diabetes management and regular eye exams can slow the progression of vision loss. Your eye doctor can perform thorough exams in which the pupil is dilated through special drops to get an in-depth look at the retina and its blood vessels. They’ll look for fatty deposits in the retina, development of new blood vessels, scar tissue, bleeding, and other abnormalities.

While diabetic retinopathy is chronic, meaning there is no cure, interventions such as laser treatments, surgeries, and medications can be used to control it. During its earliest phases, treatment may not be needed. Yet, regular exams can help an eye doctor determine when solutions should be explored, or whether improvements in your diabetes management may need to be discussed with your doctor.
