Dental fluorosis is a term for the white spots that can form on teeth as a result of excess fluoride consumption. Often seen in children, this condition is only a cosmetic concern, though it may warrant intervention if the discoloration is noticeable enough. Find out how your family dentist can help you with this issue in the guide below.

How Does It Develop?

Fluoride is a mineral found in the teeth, bones, and water sources. Some dental products also contain fluoride to strengthen and protect the enamel. When consumed in excess, the mineral may cause bright white marks on the surface of the enamel. Rarely, severe cases can develop in which darker discoloration and pits in enamel occur.

How Is It Treated?

In cases of mild fluorosis, you may not even be able to detect the discoloration unless looking very closely. In fact, your family dentist may be the only one who notices the white spots during an exam. Although the discoloration won’t disappear on its own, any noticeable spots can be addressed through solutions such as whitening treatments. For more severe cases, cosmetic treatments, including veneers and bonding, can combat discoloration. These solutions can be explored once a child reaches an appropriate age, as determined by your dentist.

Is It Possible to Prevent Fluorosis?

family dentistParents can minimize the risk of having their children develop fluorosis in a couple of ways. First, have your tap water tested to determine whether it’s overly enriched with the mineral. If it contains more than 2 mg/L of fluoride, consider alternate drinking sources, such as bottled water.

Secondly, avoid fluoride-enriched dental products for children under the age of two. Talk to your family dentist about teeth cleaning measures for babies and toddlers. In many cases, a child-sized toothbrush and water will be recommended for at-home cleanings.
