Pet skin problems can be itchy, painful, and altogether uncomfortable for your furry friend. As with humans, the skin is the largest organ on a dog's body, helping to protect internal organs, keep body temperature under control, and maintain a well-hydrated system. If your pup has been scratching or nibbling at their skin lately, learn about some of the more common skin conditions that might be the culprit in your home.

A Guide to Skin Problems in Dogs

1. Pruritus

Pruritus is the clinical term for itching. There are a variety of triggers that can lead to itching in dogs, including fleas and other pests, infections, and certain immune disorders. A dog with pruritus will scratch, bite, chew, or lick their own skin, often excessively and to the point that the spot becomes reddened and the hair falls out.

2. Hot Spots

These spots are a form of dermatitis, often a result of allergy flareups, changes in the air or humidity level, or stress. A dog with hot spots will scratch frequently and run the affected area against the floor to try to find some relief from the constant itchiness.

3. Allergies

Dogs can suffer from allergic reactions like people can. Exposure to the allergen will kick the immune system into high gear, initiating an inflammatory response that sends an increase of histamines and other chemicals to the skin surface to fight the invading substance. Dogs can be allergic to fleas, grass or other plant life, certain foods, or specific medications, among other things.

Depending on the allergen, the dog's skin can become inflamed, swollen, or hot to the touch; break out in hives; and itch more than usual. If you witness an increase in agitation or anxiety, a trip to the veterinarian is in order.

A veterinarian will be able to diagnose the exact source of these common pet skin problems and design a treatment plan based on the cause.
