Diesel trucks have unique needs. While these are powerful and reliable vehicles, they can run into a few problems that affect your ability to meet your deadlines. Knowing when to see a truck mechanic will help you avoid extensive damage and costly repairs. Here are a few problems to look out for and the potential causes behind them.

What Are Some Common Issues With Diesel Engines?

1. Overheating

Diesel engines run hotter due to steep slopes and heavy loads. That heat can get trapped inside the engine block, leading to overheating. When this happens, you’ll see the temperature gauge on the dashboard rise to dangerous levels, and may notice smoke coming from under the hood.

If you’re driving up a steep grade, turn off your air conditioning or heater. This will help keep the engine cool. If the issue persists, check that the air flow to the radiator isn’t blocked by ice buildup or debris. You should also check for coolant leaks, which also lead to overheating. Allow the engine to cool before removing the radiator cap and looking for oil or frothy bubbles in the tank. If you see these, or the coolant smells like exhaust, then you have a leak.

2. Difficulty Starting

truck mechanicDiesel engines often crank a little before starting, which is not a cause for concern. However, if starting takes longer than usual, the fuel might be contaminated with sediments.

Check the fuel filter, and have it replaced if it’s clogged with buildup. If this doesn’t fix the issue, your truck mechanic will check the injectors, electrical system, and parts of the fuel delivery system to determine the cause.

3. Black Exhaust

Diesel engines emit more smoke than ones that run on gas, but the exhaust should not be black. This problem is often accompanied by an unpleasant smell that will permeate the cab.

This is likely a problem with the injector, injector pump, air filter, or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. Your mechanic will need to repair or replace one of these.
