Installing smoke and fire alarms throughout your home will help keep your family safe. However, assuming these mechanisms are always in good working order can negate their effect. To avoid faulty parts and ensure your alarms sound when you need them, electricians recommend following a scheduled maintenance plan.

How to Keep Your Fire Alarms Working

1. Test Monthly

Test all smoke and fire detectors in the home at least once a month to make sure the batteries haven’t died and all parts are working correctly. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper testing method, but usually, it’s done by pressing and holding the test button for a few seconds until the alarm emits a loud siren. If there isn’t a sound or it can’t be heard from several rooms away, replace the batteries immediately.

electrician2. Clean Twice a Year

Both photoelectric and ionization smoke detectors rely on sensors. If they’re covered with dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and cooking vapors, they won’t be able to detect smoke easily.

Wipe down the outside of the units every six months to remove buildup. You can also remove the faces of the units and vacuum the insides with a soft brush. Consult your owner’s manual for the best cleaning method.

3. Replace the Batteries Annually

Even if the batteries appear to still work, they might be defective. Put new batteries in each alarm, even those that are hardwired, at least once a year. For those in the kitchen or other areas that are activated more frequently, replacing the batteries twice a year is often safer.
