Propane tanks are made to be durable, but they’re not indestructible. Thorough maintenance, especially in harsh seasons like winter, will ensure your tank stays safe and lasts longer. Below are a few do’s and don’ts for you to follow this winter regarding your propane tank.

Do:

Keep a clear path to it.

You need to get to your tank to inspect it or in case of a problem. Designate a safe, short path to walk to your tank and keep it clear throughout winter. Remove bramble, tree limbs, leaves, garbage, and snow and ice as needed to prevent safety hazards and allow for quick access.

Regularly check how much propane you have.

During winter, you may use more propane than you realized due to cooking at home, using more hot water, and running a gas-powered heater or fireplace more often. Keep track of how much propane you use in the first month of winter and adjust the frequency of your propane gas deliveries based on how much you use.

Don’t:

Let snow or ice accumulate on.

propane tanksPropane is affected by temperatures, and if it gets too cold, it won’t stay in a vapor state. To prevent problems, brush off any snow or ice that accumulates on the tank (being very careful not to scratch or use corrosive agents on it).

Forget to look at it after storms.

Snowstorms pose a hazard to your tank. Falling limbs and blowing debris can crash into the tank and dent or scratch it, which weakens it and makes it more susceptible to leaks, future damage, and corrosion. Serious scratches and dents will need a repair or replacement, so inspect it after each storm.
