If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may be exploring options to restore the appearance and function of your smile. There are many solutions available, one of which is a dental bridge. As you think about different types of restorative dentistry, here are some considerations to bear in mind about this option.

What Are Dental Bridges?

As their name suggests, bridges fill a gap from a missing tooth or teeth. The natural teeth on either side of the gap receive a crown, or a restoration placed directly over the enamel. Crowns help to reinforce the natural teeth, which serve as the support system for the bridge itself. Bridges consist of one or more pontics, or false teeth, which are designed to look like natural teeth.

What Are Their Advantages?

Having a bridge in place enables everyday activities like chewing and speaking comfortably. It can also enhance the appearance of a smile and ensure bite force is distributed evenly to prevent erosion of the remaining natural teeth. Bridges further protect the natural teeth by preventing them from shifting into open gaps.

What Does the Process Entail?

First, the dentist will take impressions to create crowns for the abutments (the two teeth on either side of the gap). These impressions will also be used for creating the pontics. In some cases, patients may receive a temporary bridge to safeguard teeth and gums before the final restoration is placed. The crowns may be placed at this appointment or a subsequent one.

At the next appointment, the new bridge will be placed and adjusted after the temporary one is removed. Some patients require multiple visits to secure a flawless fit. Fixed bridges, which do not get removed, are then secured in place using a dental-grade cement.
