3 Ways to Improve Yard Drainage, Jessup, Maryland

From messy puddles to drowning plants, yard drainage issues can wreak havoc on your home. To get ahead of this problem before the rainy spring months, try these solutions.

Water Flow Solutions for Your Yard

1. Plant Trees

Trees and plants that subsist on large amounts of water are ideal for soaking up excess runoff in your yard. Keep in mind that not all trees and plants fall into this category, and too much water could harm those that don’t. Stick to trees such as bald cypress, pear, and river birch, and plants such as marsh marigold and cardinal flower.

2. Install Pervious Pavers

These stones incorporate gaps and porous materials to allow water to drain into the soil or the subbase below. To reduce runoff and prevent puddles, choose either plastic grid pavers or interlocking concrete grids.

3. Create an Underground Drain

If the water accumulation in your yard is severe, you may have to build an underground drain. A French drain is an ideal solution in most cases because it doesn’t require an outlet. In its simplest form, this is a trench filled with gravel. More complex constructions also include perforated pipes at the bottom. This system will collect the water around its opening and transport it somewhere less bothersome.
