Whether you’re a hobbyist or professional musician, there may come a time when you need to place your instrument in long-term storage. When moving this type of equipment into a storage unit, it’s crucial to do so correctly. That way, when you take it out again, it will still play the way it should. If you need to store a drum kit, follow the guide below.

Why Drums Need Climate Controlled Storage

Drums include metal and wood components. Wood expands and contracts in moist environments, and metal can rust. These issues can affect the sound produced by the equipment and shorten its lifespan.

To avoid these problems and ensure your drums work like new when you use them again, make sure to choose a climate controlled unit that regulates temperature and moisture levels.

How to Properly Pack a Drum Kit

storage-unitThe first step is to disassemble the equipment. Once that’s done, you can care for the individual parts.

To begin, remove the legs from each drum, then take the heads off. Once you’ve done this, store your drums like Russian dolls by placing smaller units inside larger ones. Finally, detach the cymbals and fold up their stands. Wrap all small pieces individually in bubble wrap. Put cymbals in padded cases.

For the drums themselves, use large plastic containers or cardboard boxes. Label the packaging to make everything easier to find when you need to access your unit again.
