Youth sports are a fantastic way to teach your child invaluable lessons that are beneficial throughout life, such as sportsmanship, a strong work ethic, and working within a team. One way you can help them not just enjoy sports but also thrive in them is by providing them all of the necessary sports equipment they need. With baseball season right around the corner, now is the time to head to your sporting goods store to stock up on these essential items.

Sports Equipment to Get for Baseball Season

1. General Equipment

Most youth leagues supply a screen printing jersey with the team’s sponsor on the front and a number on the back, but you’ll have to get the baseball pants and socks. These are important because they provide the necessary protection against the dirt when sliding into a base or diving for a catch.

You’ll also need a pair of cleats, but be sure to look up the league’s regulations. For many youth leagues, metal cleats are banned because of the safety risk they pose when sliding with the foot raised.

2. Defensive Gear

Sports EquipmentThe first item your child needs is the glove. These can be somewhat rigid when first bought, so a helpful tip is to break it in before the first practice. Place a baseball into the mitt and wrap a belt around the exterior, securing it tightly. Leave it wrapped overnight to loosen the leather and make it easier to use.

Also, purchase a cup for added protection. Baseballs take unpredictable bounces when they come into contact with debris on the field, and it’s great to have protection when this happens.

3. Offensive Sports Equipment

When your child steps into the batter’s box, the first thing you want to ensure is that they are safe, so be sure to pick up a batter’s helmet to protect them from errant pitches.

They’ll also need a bat, and outside of the major leagues or very specialized leagues, aluminum bats are the recommended option. To pick the right length, stand the bat up against the side of your child’s leg. If the end reaches the center of their palm when they reach down, it’s the recommended length.

Finally, pick up a pair of batting gloves. These give them a better grip on the bat and offer some protection if the ball hits their hand while swinging.
