Although Hawaii is one of the world’s leading producers of pineapple, the islands are known for many other specialties as well. The next time you visit the islands, try some of these unique flavors when you see them on a cafe menu.

4 Unique Hawaiian Flavors

1. Lilikoi

A type of passion fruit, lilkoi in Hawaii is yellow and has a sweet, tart flavor. You can eat the pulp and seeds: just cut the fruit in half and dig in. But you’ll often find lilikoi used in cocktails, smoothies, desserts, and jams.

2. Guava

Hawaii is one of the only places in the U.S. where guavas are grown, and you can find the sweet fruit used in everything from pastry fillings to juice. The entire fruit, which has yellow skin and pink flesh, is edible, and ripe guavas have a strong, sweet scent.

3. Haupia

cafeSimilar to pudding or gelatin dessert, haupia is a traditional Hawaiian dessert made with coconut milk and a thickener, such as corn starch or, traditionally, arrowroot. Typically cut into blocks, this coconut treat is often used on top of wedding cakes or as a layer in pies with chocolate and other flavors.

4. Li Hing Mui

A favorite among locals, li hing mui is a Chinese import to the islands. Combining sweet, sour, and salty flavors, li hing is a dried plum. Although the treats can be enjoyed on their own, li hing mui powder is also popular. Made from the skin of dried plums mixed with licorice, salt, and sweeteners, the powder can be mixed into alcoholic drinks or sprinkled on fruit, candy, or shave ice to give it a distinct tangy and salty flavor.
