A sump pump removes water from your home’s basement, preventing flooding and expensive repair bills. With spring and its rain showers on the way, it’s important to ensure your water pump is working properly. Here are a few ways to get it ready for spring.

How to Prepare Your Sump Pump for Spring

1. Get Rid of Debris

water pumpDirt, rocks, and other debris can accumulate in your sump pump over time, preventing it from working properly. Once you have taken the cover off the tank, look for this debris in the pump. If you see mud or other thick substances, flush the sump pump with water. After using a hose or a bucket to fill the pump with water, turn it on and pay attention to strange sounds. If you hear screeching or knocking noises, the pump may require repairs.

2. Check the Discharge Pipe

Once your sump pump has removed water from the basement, it will send it outside through the discharge pipe. However, if it’s filled with rocks, rodent nests, and other debris, it won’t be able to adequately drain. If these substances have accumulated in the discharge pipe, a plumber will need to remove them.

3. Inspect the Float Switch

The float switch floats up when the sump pump fills with water. If the switch isn’t operating correctly, the sump pump won’t be able to remove water from your home. To ensure the float is working, pour a few gallons of water into the tank and wait for it to turn on. If the float doesn’t automatically remove the liquid, it may need to be replaced.
