As a parent, you want to make your child's dental care a priority with daily brushing and flossing, healthy nutrition, and routine visits to the dentist. But surprisingly, many kid foods can stain your child’s teeth and dim their smiles. Below, learn more about which foods could be affecting your child’s oral health.

A Parent's Guide to Teeth-Staining Foods

1. Fruit Juices

Fruit juice is a staple of kids' diets, but many varieties can stain teeth. In general, the darker the juice, the higher the staining potential. Grape, berry, and apple juices are all high in tannins, which are sticky plant compounds that easily adhere to the surfaces of teeth and stain the protective enamel. Most juices also have a high acid content, which softens tooth enamel and makes it less able to repel staining ingredients.

2. Tomatoes

Like fruit juice, tomatoes are full of acids that weaken tooth enamel, making it easier for the red pigmentation to cling to the teeth. Marinara sauces are not the only tomato-based foods to enjoy in moderation—ketchup, barbecue sauce, and tomato and vegetable juices are also frequent stain triggers.

3. Popsicles

After your child enjoys a popsicle, you've likely noticed that their entire mouth has taken on the color of the flavor they've just consumed. If their tongue and lips have been stained, their teeth probably have been too. The intense dyes used in these products can quickly dim even the brightest smile. In addition to that, the sucking action puts the sugar content of the popsicle in close contact with the teeth, where it can lead to cavities, eventually requiring dental care treatment like fillings or crowns.
