If you’re in search of a holistic treatment that has an impact on both mind and body, acupuncture might be the right option for you. However, people get the most out of the treatment when they take the right steps before their appointment. This guide explains what you should and shouldn’t do before your acupuncture visit.

Do:

Wear the right clothing.

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is best on the day of your appointment. This helps the acupuncturist easily access different areas of your body, while also ensuring you’re comfortable after the procedure has been completed. Tight-fitting clothing around the treatment area may restrict blood circulation, which could prevent the acupuncture from fully benefiting your health, so wear loose-fitting clothing instead.

Arrive at your visit 15 minutes early.

Your acupuncturist may have some questions for you regarding your health and lifestyle. Arriving early allows time to answer these questions, while also giving your time to ask questions of your own. You may also need to fill out paperwork and forms, similar to any other doctor or clinical visit.

Schedule enough time for the appointment.

Acupuncture sessions can last an hour or more. Make sure you have ample time on the day of the appointment so you don’t need to cut the session short. Also, try to schedule time after the treatment for rest and relax, so you can maintain your peaceful state.

Don’t:

Eat a large meal.

Eating too much before your appointment may cause discomfort and can get in the way of your relaxed state. Conversely, not eating at all may cause you to become hungry during the session, which will be distracting. A light meal is best in this case, such as fresh veggies or a bowl of fruit.

Take your phone with you.

AcupunctureThe goal of an acupuncture session is to achieve a state of relaxation. Your phone is a source of distraction or even frustration if you use it for work purposes. In either case, it’s best to leave it in your car before the appointment so you’re not tempted. If you can’t leave it in your car, turn it off to avoid unwanted interruptions.

Drink alcohol.

Alcohol can have a poor effect on your body, and it can also cloud your mind. For treatment to be the most successful, being healthy in body and mind is an absolute must. As a result, it’s best to not drink alcohol on the day of your treatment for the best results, and at least a day after the session.
