An odd scent coming from a car is never a positive sign. However, you can determine how serious the issue is by the smell, which can help you describe the problem when bringing your car to an auto service specialist. Before picking up the phone, try to identify the scent and where it is coming from. Below, learn some of the more common odors and what they mean.

3 Car Warning Smells

1. Burnt Paper

If it smells like burnt paper each time you change gears, that’s because the component is overheating. Cars have clutch facings, which is a device that makes clutch use smoother and more consistent. However, there are drivers that “ride” the clutch or frequently step on the pedal, creating friction each time the pedal makes contact. This friction burns the paper clutch facings, and continual use causes the whole clutch to fail. If you smell paper, you need to replace the clutch. To prevent future issues, it’s more cost-efficient to practice driving without using the clutch so frequently.

2. Rotten Eggs

The most likely reason you smell it is that your catalytic converter is failing. A working catalytic converter converts hydrogen sulfide into the less-toxic sulfur dioxide. An auto service team may be able to repair the issue, but you could need a new catalytic converter altogether.

3. Maple Syrup

Some people may smell a maple syrup scent when their engines have been running for a few minutes. This scent is actually ethylene glycol, and, despite its sweet scent, this organic compound is toxic. If this sweet smell arises, there’s likely a leak somewhere. Where it smells strongest indicates where the problem lies. If it’s more pungent inside the car, you probably have a damaged heater core. If it smells more outside the vehicle, it could be leaking from the radiator, cylinder head, heater hose, or a failed intake manifold gasket.
